In just about every aspect of our lives today, there are considerations to be made and choices in for what is better for our planet. What it comes down to is which of our activities daily are using the most resources, and how can we cut down on that.
We decided to take a look at ongoing education, and whether staying home and studying online is better for the planet than commuting to a local college or university. And while both have their merits and disadvantages, there was a clear winner when it comes to the health of the planet.
There are few courses available that you can’t find online. Even an aspiring singer will find that they can learn to sing online with the right equipment and site. With learning online, you are expending electricity from your computer, and maybe some paper products to take notes with. But other than that, learning online is not using a ton of natural resources.
A College Campus
Alternatively, you have a busy campus and no matter how hard they try, they are expending much more resources per student than you are at home. Take first the gas needed to get to school, and the pollution those vehicles emit. Then there is the massive expenditure in electricity from the lights and other equipment.
Another thing to consider is the control you have at home to eat and use only organic products. College campuses are not going to be catering to this. Instead, you will find an abundance of pre-packaged foods being served on non-biodegradable plates and trays. And that is not even taking into consideration the massive number of vending machines that are dispensing food as well.
All of this before even thinking about the amount of paper being used. Text books luckily will usually be recycled, but notebooks and workbooks will not. This is a forest worth of trees being cut down to just for one college term.
Which is the Better Choice?
Clearly you can see that taking classes online is much better for the environment than typical college. Do you get the same level of education and degree requirements? The learn how to sing online class we looked at offered all of the same benefits and more than your typical classes. And degree wise, a degree earned online is just as impressive as one earned in a typical university environment.
Whether looking to learn how to sing online, or preparing to be the next president, consider an online university over the brick and mortar one if you want a healthy planet to sing on in the future.
